What is a Waterproof Shade Structure?

A waterproof shade structure is a structure which is built to support a waterproof shade sail. The waterproof sail, which is made up of a pvc membrane is supported by a specially designed structure. The specially designed structure will enable the waterproof material to be fully supported. The waterproof material is commonly a PVC membrane. A waterproof shade structure does not rely on a tensioning system to support the waterproof sail between posts or mounts, it has supporting structures that ensure the membrane cannot pool water. A waterproof shade structure can be a stand alone structure to support a waterproof pvc membrane shade sail, or it can be connected through to an existing structure using roof or wall mounts.

Common problems with Waterproof Shade Sails

A waterproof shade sail supported by its own structure is by far a better choice for your waterproof shade sail covering. Tensioned waterproof shade sails that rely only on posts or structural mounts, with no cross bracing structural supports can cause many problems.

Tensioned waterproof shade sail systems purely between posts in the ground without any cross braces structural support, will often pool water on top of them. Water pooling on top of a waterproof shade sail causes irreparable damage to the sail and the posts that are meant to support it.

When there is water pooling on top of a waterproof tensioned shade sail too much pressure is placed on the posts and mounts. This increased load is detrimental to the structural supports of the waterproof tensioned shade sail.

There is around ten times the amount of pressure placed on a waterproof sail compared to a non waterproof shade sail as air and water cannot pass through it.

Approximately 1 litre of water is collected for every square metre per minute from a waterproof shade sail. Due to this a waterproof shade sail has to have a lot of pitch and height in it to allow the water to run off of it effectively.

Waterproof shade sail structures will require council approval in some regions when they cover over 10 square metres, other regions may want council approval when the area covered is over 20 square metres. It is best for you to check your local council guidelines when deciding if a waterproof shade sail structure will suit your needs.
